At Oakmoor, homework is a vital part of learning from Year 7 to Year 11. It helps students revisit and practise key knowledge, strengthening long-term memory and developing independent learning habits. The routines and study skills established in Year 7 form the foundation of a successful revision journey, enabling students to build secure knowledge over time and achieve success in assessments, GCSE examinations and beyond.

Our Homework Approach for Year 7 and 8

Students in Years 7 and 8 receive a combination of regular online and subject-specific homework. We use a range of platforms designed to build knowledge and confidence through frequent practice and retrieval of learning. These include:

• Sparx Reader (Reading)
• Sparx Maths
• Sparx Science
• Seneca (English)
• Carousel Learning (Geography, History, RE, MFL and Computer Science revision)
• Art homework is paper based
• Transition Booklet activities for Year 7 students during the start of the autumn term  

Homework Schedule

Students receive homework throughout the week according to a published timetable. Core homework is set weekly, with some foundation subjects setting homework every two weeks. All homework and instructions are recorded on Microsoft Teams, enabling students and parents to access tasks and deadlines easily.  

Supporting Success

We encourage students to complete homework little and often rather than leaving tasks until the deadline. Parents and carers can support by helping students establish a regular homework routine, monitoring deadlines and encouraging them to seek help early if they encounter any difficulties. Homework support is available in school through lunchtime and after-school provision.  

Expectations

Homework is an important part of learning at Oakmoor.  Where homework deadlines are missed, students will attend a homework detention where staff can provide support and help them establish positive homework habits.

Key Stage 4 Homework

Our Homework Approach for Year 9, 10 and 11  

Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 receive regular weekly homework in their subjects. Homework is carefully planned to reinforce classroom learning and ensure important knowledge remains fresh in students' minds. Every homework task contributes to students' preparation for GCSE courses and examinations.  

Homework is set and due on the same day each week for each subject, providing a clear and consistent routine for students and families. Art, Photography and Design Technology may set deadlines according to individual project requirements and lesson timetables.  

Supporting Success

Students are encouraged to complete homework regularly throughout the week rather than leaving tasks until the deadline. Building on homework in Key Stage 3, establishing strong study habits in Key Stage 4 is essential for managing GCSE courses successfully and preparing effectively for examinations.  

A range of support is available to help students complete homework successfully, including lunchtime subject support sessions and a daily Homework Club in the Library Computer Suites from 3:00pm to 4:00pm.  

Expectations

We encourage parents and carers to take an active interest in homework, support students to establish effective routines and encourage them to seek help early if they experience difficulties. Working together helps students develop the habits, knowledge and resilience needed to achieve their full potential at GCSE and beyond.

Homework is an important part of every student's education at Oakmoor. If a student does not submit their homework by the deadline, they will be issued a 40-minute homework detention with the relevant subject teacher.

For example, if a student misses a Science homework deadline, they will be assigned a 40minute Science homework detention. If a student does not attend this detention, they will be issued a Science twilight detention. Twilight detentions run from 3:05pm to 4:15pm.
