At Oakmoor school, we are committed to providing all pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum that supports their academic, social, and personal development. We do not take the decision to narrow a child’s curriculum lightly. Any such decision would only be considered in exceptional circumstances and in line with the Education Act 1996. Requests to reduce curriculum subjects in order to focus more heavily on other areas of study will not be supported, as we believe that every subject contributes meaningfully to a child’s overall education and future opportunities.

Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)

Parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education (RE), in accordance with the Education Act 1996. While we encourage open dialogue and aim to provide an inclusive and respectful RE curriculum, we recognise that some families may wish to exercise this right.

If you are considering withdrawing your child from RE, the process is as follows:

    1. Initial Request:
Parents/carers should write formally to the Headteacher, outlining their concerns and the reasons for wishing to withdraw their child from RE.
    2. Meeting to Discuss Concerns:
A meeting will be arranged with the Head of RE and a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to discuss the issues raised. This meeting provides an opportunity to explore the RE curriculum, clarify any misunderstandings, and consider whether the concerns can be resolved.
    3. Confirmation of Withdrawal:
If, after this meeting, parents/carers still wish to proceed with the withdrawal, a second written confirmation should be sent to the Headteacher.
    4. Alternative Arrangements:
Once the withdrawal is confirmed, the school will make appropriate arrangements for the student during RE lessons. These arrangements will be discussed with parents/carers to ensure they are suitable and in the best interest of the student.
